The Purposeful Classroom


This series, designed for teacher teams and administrators, focuses on the Gradual Release of Responsibility and provides participants with information about implementation of an instructional framework that ensures student success, including establishing purpose, modeling thinking, guiding instruction, productive group work, and independent learning tasks.

October 16th, January 22nd, March 5th. In addition, participants are given an opportunity to attend two optional, 2-hour (4pm – 6pm) follow up collaborative meetings on November 13th and February 26th. These meetings will provide teachers the venue for sharing student work which has been generated while utilizing strategies from The Purposeful Classroom.

The Will to Lead, the Skill to Teach

This series, designed for leadership teams made up of teacher leaders and administrators, will provide participants the opportunity to examine four broad steps to developing a positive learning environment (aligning philosophies, managing frustration, creating a culture of collaboration, and institutionalizing a healthy culture) and uncover the components of responsive pedagogy—a skillful and balanced framework of traditional and culturally responsive activities used in the classroom.

California Common Core State Standards


In order to differentiate our professional development around common core standards, we are providing multiple opportunities and formats for participation. All of the following may also be customized to present at staff meetings or on staff development days upon request.

  • CCSS Overview of Content and Curriculum- This online module provides an overview of key features of the Common Core State Standards and guides educators to discover the shifts and changes from the 1997 standards for English language arts and Mathematics and how these changes affect their learning contexts. The module includes links to high quality resources to guide implementation of the Common Core State Standards.

  • Going Deeper: CCSS Instructional Strategies & Practices-
    Day 1 is designed to assist teachers in beginning to think about how to transition to the new standards, and offers possible examples of how to teach to the new standards.
    Day 2 will be spent collaboratively designing/deepening current units of instruction to include a performance assessment, speaking and listening activities, integrated literacy skills, and 21st century learning tools.

Leading Edge Online and Blended Teacher Certification


Online and Blended Teacher Certification guides educators through a curriculum based on the iNACOL National Standards for Online Teaching. Leading Edge Certified Online and Blended Teachers not only have the skills to effectively facilitate online courses, but also have a solid understanding of how to enhance the learning opportunities for all students enrolled in their courses.

This certification program includes two face-to-face workshops and 8 weeks of online coursework equivalent to approximately 45-60 hours.

Participants should be able to navigate the Internet and have basic technical skills, for example using productivity tools and web 2.0 tools.

Digital Connections


The Digital Connections Project seeks to provide the technology resources required for curriculum-based digital media production as well as ongoing professional development for two partner teachers at a school site.
Participants learn to differentiate instruction and engage students with project-based learning & digital media production. Film-making basics, tips & tricks for capturing video, and the process of integrating video production in the classroom are taught. Opportunities for planning curriculum-based video projects will be provided along with online resources for using digital media with students. The long-term goal of the project is to scale the use of digital tools amongst staff and students and build capacity within the Santa Cruz county educator community.

Professional Development In The Arts

Visual And Performing Arts Specialists will come together throughout the school year from across the county to take part in peer professional development. The sessions will help build the wider arts community while focusing on cross-county articulation and best practices in teaching the arts. The sessions will be designed and facilitated by VAPA teachers.

These sessions will take place from 1:45 – 3:15 pm on three Wed afternoons, spread across the year. They will be open to any VAPA specialist whose district / site is willing to release them at that time.

Arts Institute


Normally held the last week of June, K-8 teachers will have a week of immersion in arts. This week long Institute is extended through the year by three Saturday follow-up sessions and individual coaching in school.


There are two strands to this Institute. Strand one is for teachers who are new to, and would like to gain some experience in, the arts. Participants will study two arts disciplines with the focus on teacher as learner. There will also be group sessions in classroom application.

Strand two is for those teachers who either have a specialism in one art form or have been through strand one of the Institute in a previous year. Participants will have the option of taking classes in specific arts disciplines or in Integrated Arts.


These participants will study their specialist arts discipline and strategies on how to build it into a generalist curriculum with emphasis on teacher as teacher.

Common Core Standards for Principal Networks


K – 12 administrators continue to be provided opportunities to work with the new standards, sample assessment items and current units of instruction in order to analyze and facilitate the changes needed to meet the new guidelines. These networks provide a wonderful platform for administrators to share best practices and challenges across districts and schools.

Administrator Training Programs


Tier 1 CPACE Test Prep Modules:
For teachers interested in a Pathway toward School Administration, the SCCOE will be offering California Preliminary Administrative Credential Exam (CPACE) Test Prep Modules in the Fall of 2012.

The California Preliminary Administrative Credential Examination is a Tier 1 administrative exam approved by the CTC. This exam focuses specifically on the requirements for school leadership in California based on the California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders. The examination consists of two separate test components: (1) a computer-based written component, which consists of 70 multiple-choice items and four constructed-response items, including one case study, and (2) a 7 – 10 minute video component which shows the candidate performing how they would handle a mock situation. Tier 2 Administrative Services Credential Program
The Santa Cruz COE is dedicated to the development of high-quality leaders who provide rigorous educational programs for all students. The Tier 2 Program delivers an interconnected and comprehensive curriculum, which integrates face-to-face sessions, one-to-one mentoring, field experiences, cohort professional learning communities, and blended learning opportunities. The curriculum is based on the California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (CPSELs) and is designed for candidates in administrative positions to demonstrate their ability to meet or exceed each of the standards.

Using materials and current research from experts such as Ken O’Conner and Doug Reeves, we will facilitate conversations and activities with your elementary or secondary staff. Participants are given the opportunity to examine grading practices/policies to determine if they are objective, equitable, and fair.

Improving Content Literacy


Teachers of English learners and struggling students in grades 6-12 will be looking at how to improve content literacy by learning new approaches (strategies & language support), reflecting on student work and planning for upcoming instruction. Three whole group meetings within a semester, or spread throughout the year, are recommended with coaching sessions in between.

Web 2.0 & 21st Century Tools


Master Web 2.0 technology tools to increase your productivity, communication, and collaboration. Hands-on time will be provided to ask questions and work uninterrupted on projects to increase personal capacity with 21st century tools. Activities can include creating blogs, wikis, collaborative documents, podcasts, digital stories, surveys, polls, and so much more!

2012-2013 Student Events


Spelling Bee


In partnership with Newspapers in Education/The Sentinel and UCSC, the Santa Cruz County Office of Education coordinates the annual Spelling Bee. Two students from each site, grades 4-6 and 7-9, compete locally. Winners from each grade span go to state competitions. This event is scheduled to take place on Feb 23rd, 2013.

Science Fair


The Santa Cruz County Science Fair provides a competitive academic opportunity for students in grades 4-12. Students design individual or team science projects and compete for awards, scholarships and prizes. Top award winners represent Santa Cruz County at the California State Science Fair and International Science and Engineering Fair. Science Fair workshops for students and teachers are offered annually. This event is scheduled to take place on March 9th, 2013.

Math Contest


The Math Contest provides students in grades 5-8 with both a team competition and an individual test format. The team competition requires students work together using problem-solving strategies, showing work and providing clear and detailed explanations. The individual test for all grade levels uses a free response format. The 8th grade test includes questions that reflect state requirements for 8th grade Algebra. Students receive certificates of participation and contest winners receive achievement medals. This event is scheduled to take place on May 4th 2013.

Family Art Nights


Family Art Nights are brought to you by a collaboration between the County Office of Education, the Cultural Council and the Tannery Arts Center. They provide a wonderful opportunity for families to participate in arts events together and for schools to meet new potential SPECTRA artists. Families experiencing art together not only enjoy the activity, but also begin to understand how important it is that schools have art programs to help promote creative 21st century thinking and problem-solving skills.
